Heat and Celtics vie for Giannis Antetokounmpo as NBA draft approaches

Miami is hosting a draft night event at Kaseya Center on Tuesday, but the focus is on whether the Heat will finalize a trade for Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo before the draft begins. The team holds the 13th overall pick, which could be used as part of a pre-draft deal with the Bucks. NBA rules prevent the Heat from trading away a first-round pick in two consecutive years, so any agreement would likely involve the Heat selecting a player on behalf of Milwaukee.

Boston has also emerged as a serious contender, with reports that the Celtics are prepared to include All-Star guard Jaylen Brown in a trade package. Sources say the Celtics have a "real shot" to acquire Antetokounmpo by offering Brown and possibly additional assets.

Milwaukee co-owner Jimmy Haslam indicated the Bucks want to decide Antetokounmpo's future by the draft, and league insiders expect a trade to be completed before the first round starts. If a deal is reached before the draft, Miami could add its 2026, 2030 and 2032 first-round picks to the offer; after the draft, only two first-round picks could be included.

The Heat’s roster includes young players such as Kel’el Ware and Tyler Herro, who are likely to be part of any trade proposal. Center Bam Adebayo is reportedly off the table. Boston’s offer appears to hinge on Brown, who averaged 25.7 points last season and is the highest-rated player the Bucks have been linked to in trade talks.

Antetokounmpo, 31, is on an expiring contract with a player option for 2027-28 and is eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on October 1. He is due $58.5 million for the upcoming season.

If Miami does not acquire Antetokounmpo, the team will retain the 13th pick, with a range of prospects projected to be available, and may consider other trade scenarios. The draft party will begin at 7 p.m., featuring fan activities and giveaways.
