Texas driver in Tesla on autopilot crashes into home, killing resident

A Tesla Model 3 equipped with an automated driving assistance system left the roadway and collided with a residence in Katy, Texas, on Friday night, killing a woman inside the home. The vehicle was driven by Michael Butler, who was traveling at about 8 p.m. local time, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

"Butler's Tesla entered through the brick residence, at a high rate of speed, and struck M. Avila who was inside the residence," the sheriff’s office said.

Avila was airlifted to a hospital where she later died. Butler, who sustained injuries, showed no signs of intoxication and is cooperating with investigators. No attorney information was immediately available, and as of Saturday afternoon no charges had been filed. The investigation remains ongoing.
