Interior Secretary Burgum pledges full prosecution for Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool vandalism

Résumé

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that authorities will pursue full legal action against individuals who cut a 350-foot gash in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and left graffiti, noting multiple arrests and ongoing repairs.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said on Saturday that vandals who cut a 350-foot gash in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and spray-painted graffiti will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Burgum told "Fox & Friends Weekend" that investigators believe a box cutter was used, and that seven arrests have been made, several citations issued and 18 police reports filed in connection with the incident.

He described the Reflecting Pool as part of the 1922 Lincoln Memorial and noted that fencing has been installed around the pool while repairs continue ahead of July 4 celebrations. The administration has also reported restoration work on more than 50 parks and circles, 48 monuments, 22 fountains and approximately 1,700 lights on the National Mall.

President Donald Trump also commented on the damage, describing the cut as a "350-feet-long scar" and attributing it to individuals seeking to harm the country.
