Increased Police Presence Around Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool After Liner Damage Reported

Resumen

The National Park Service and U.S. Park Police have stepped up patrols and installed temporary fencing at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following a reported incident that damaged the pool's new liner.

Washington — The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a long-standing site for public gatherings and photography, is now subject to heightened security measures. After a June 9 incident in which a sharp object cut the pool’s recently installed liner, the National Park Service alerted the U.S. Park Police, prompting additional foot patrols and the deployment of National Guard personnel.

Authorities arrested a man who briefly touched a piece of the peeling paint on the liner after a park worker warned him to stop. The individual was taken into custody for violating regulations that prohibit entering the water.

Park officials have also erected temporary fencing near the pool deck, a move they say is intended to support upcoming Fourth of July events. The area now features mobile surveillance towers and increased law-enforcement visibility.

The reflecting pool has historically served as a venue for protests, vigils, celebrations and even seasonal activities such as skating. Its recent security enhancements reflect concerns over the recent damage and ongoing preservation efforts.
