The United States men’s national team clinched first place in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 2-0 victory over Australia, leaving one group match remaining. The win, combined with Paraguay’s 1-0 success over Turkey, guarantees the Americans a spot in the knockout stage for the first time in the tournament's history.
The U.S. will face the third-place team from one of Groups B, E, F, I or J on July 1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Pre-tournament FIFA data indicated that the winner of the Wednesday match between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Qatar would most likely become the opponent, appearing in 60 percent of the 495 possible result permutations.
Analysts rank potential opponents from easiest to most challenging. The list includes Curacao (ranked 83), Jordan (68), Bosnia-Herzegovina (64), Iraq (60), Qatar (58), Sweden (36), Algeria (31), Ivory Coast (30), Ecuador (29), Norway (26), Austria (21), Japan (17) and Senegal (16). The assessment notes that the United States would be the higher-ranked side in each scenario and has shown organized, confident play in its opening matches.
"If the match between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Qatar ends in a draw, the United States could face a wide range of opponents from Europe, Africa, Asia or South America," a tournament analyst said.
The exact opponent will be known after the Wednesday game, after which the U.S. will begin its pursuit of a World Cup title under the lights of Levi's Stadium.
