Celtics and Heat Lead Advanced Trade Talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo
Boston and Miami are the primary contenders in negotiations with Milwaukee over a possible trade for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to league sources.
Boston and Miami are engaged in the most advanced discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks regarding a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, a report by Marc Stein of The Stein Line indicated. A league source told Stein that Boston emerged from the weekend with a "real shot" at acquiring the player, centering its offer around forward Jaylen Brown and likely including additional young talent and future draft assets. Milwaukee is reportedly willing to consider a deal with Boston even if a third team is not involved, though the Bucks are seeking another lottery pick in addition to their No. 10 selection, which could complicate Boston's position at No. 27.
Miami also remains in the mix, proposing a package that includes guard Tyler Herro, forward Kel’el Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. and draft assets, and is prepared to add further draft capital or players. ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst identified Boston and Miami as the "finalists" to land Antetokounmpo and noted that the Celtics have gone "all in" with Brown as part of their latest proposal.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and Portland Trail Blazers, previously mentioned as interested parties, have reportedly scaled back their pursuit. Sources say the Timberwolves are reassessing their offer after learning the Bucks now demand more than earlier proposals, while Portland's interest has diminished despite earlier speculation about acquiring Bucks draft picks.
Milwaukee has asked teams to submit their best offers by February and is unlikely to halt talks again, according to Stein. The trade deadline is viewed as a critical point, with co-owner Jimmy Haslam describing it as the "natural time" for a resolution. Antetokounmpo will be eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on October 1 and holds a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season, which could affect his future with the Bucks.
