Driver Killed and Dozens Injured in Bedford Train Collision
Two East Midlands Railway passenger trains collided south of Bedford, killing the driver and injuring multiple passengers, ABC News reported. The BBC added that the crash left one person dead and dozens injured, with 55 people listed as seriously hurt. Subsequent BBC updates said the collision had injured almost 90 passengers, more than 30 of whom were in serious condition, and later clarified that 89 people were injured, including 11 with very serious injuries.
The latest BBC bulletin noted that nine victims remained in critical condition and that about 100 people had been injured overall. Authorities declared a major incident, activated emergency response plans and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
