Wyndham Clark Holds Six-Shot Lead Over Scottie Scheffler Ahead of US Open Final Round

Summary

Clark leads the US Open by six strokes after a 70-par round, while world No. 1 Scheffler moves into a tie for second as he pursues a career Grand Slam.

Wyndham Clark entered the final day of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills with a six-shot advantage, having carded a level-par 70 that included an eagle on the 16th hole. The 32-year-old finished the round at seven under par, the only player still in the red after 54 holes. Clark said he was "frustrated about the 18th bogey and the bogey on the 15th" and noted that a six-shot lead was larger than he expected.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, playing his 30th birthday, rose to a tie for second with a one-under 70 after a comeback that featured four birdies on the back nine, including a chip-in from off the 14th green. Scheffler said, "We've been battling hard for a few days, and I did a good job of keeping myself in the tournament. I'll need a really nice round if I'm going to try and catch Wyndham."

Other contenders included Sahith Theegala, Sam Stevens and Tom Kim, who also sat at one under, while Xander Schauffele was level par. Matt Fitzpatrick, paired with Clark, fell to one over after a 74. Former runner-up Tommy Fleetwood and Collin Morikawa were tied for tenth, and Rory McIlroy dropped to tied-seventeenth, ten strokes behind the leader.

Statistically, a 54-hole lead of six strokes or more has preceded victory in 12 of the last 13 men’s majors, underscoring Clark's strong position heading into Sunday’s final round.
