Summary

An 18-year-old visitor from India fell and died when a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park bolted after the driver stepped away to take a photo.

An 18-year-old Indian tourist died on a Wednesday afternoon after a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park bolted when the driver left the vehicle to take a family portrait. The Mahajan family, visiting New York for the first time, had been touring the park when the incident occurred near the Cherry Hill fountain.

According to the victim’s father, Deepak Mahajan, the driver stepped away from the red-and-white carriage to frame the shot, and the horse suddenly ran off, crossing the sidewalk and grass while the driver chased after it.

"We were yelling, ‘Help me, help me!’" Mr. Mahajan said.

The family attempted to hold on as the carriage moved, but the mother fell out, and the son jumped down to assist her before being thrown from the carriage. The incident resulted in the teen’s fatal fall.
