G7 Leaders Back Trump's Tentative Iran Deal Amid Implementation Questions
At the conclusion of the G7 summit in France, leaders endorsed President Trump's provisional agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend a cease-fire, while expressing concerns over its details and regional reactions.
Leaders of the Group of Seven issued a joint declaration supporting U.S. President Donald Trump’s provisional agreement with Iran that aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend the current cease-fire in the region. The statement described the deal as a "historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities," and said the G7 were ready to assist with its implementation, although the text of the agreement has not been released by either side.
Trump, who arrived late to the final day of talks at the Evian-les-Bains resort, addressed reporters, stating that the deal ensures Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon, which he said fulfills "about 99.9% of what I wanted." He also acknowledged skepticism from allies, particularly Israel, and noted his displeasure with Israel’s conduct in Lebanon.
The G7 declaration called for an international maritime mission led by France and the United Kingdom to protect merchant vessels and verify the removal of mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that previously handled roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas trade before being blocked at the start of the conflict on Feb. 28.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Israeli forces remaining in southern Lebanon would breach the agreement, while the G7 affirmed support for a robust cease-fire, Lebanese efforts to disarm Hezbollah, and the protection of Lebanon’s sovereignty.
In addition to the Iran issue, the summit addressed broader concerns, including Chinese export subsidies, support for Ukraine against Russia, increased sanctions on Moscow’s energy sector, intensified actions against international drug trafficking, and measures to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking. Trump also held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi during the meeting.
