US and Iran sign interim cease-fire deal, but analysts doubt lasting peace

Summary

The United States and Iran have agreed to a 60-day cease-fire and limited shipping access in the Strait of Hormuz, but experts say the pact is unlikely to resolve deeper regional tensions.

Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday that halts hostilities for 60 days and calls for negotiations on Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, sanctions and frozen assets. The accord also requires the United States to lift its naval blockade of Iran and obliges Tehran to allow free passage for all vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a key conduit for a fifth of global oil and gas supplies.

Analysts interviewed said the interim deal is a temporary measure rather than a pathway to a comprehensive settlement. > "It’s just a big Band-Aid and future conflict is likely to come at some point," said Neil Quilliam, a Middle East expert at Chatham House. The memorandum does not address Iran’s ballistic-missile programme or the financing of the regional “Axis of Resistance,” a coalition that includes Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis, raising concerns in Israel and Gulf states.

The cease-fire also extends to Lebanon, easing immediate fighting but offering little reassurance about longer-term stability. > "Gaza is a case in point. The deal there didn’t contend with the past, the present or the future of the conflict," said Alia Brahimi of the Atlantic Council. Observers noted that similar cease-fires have failed to produce lasting political solutions, citing the stalled reconstruction effort in Gaza.

Gulf nations, which suffered infrastructure damage from Iranian drone strikes, are likely to seek ways to contain a more assertive Iran. > "The realisation that they can’t rely on the US is the point of consensus," said H.A. Hellyer of the Royal United Services Institute. While oil and gas shipments may resume in the short term, experts warn that the underlying disputes could reignite hostilities once the interim period ends.
