Trump Announces Completion of U.S.-Iran Deal and Lifts Strait of Hormuz Blockade

Summary

President Trump said a U.S.-Iran agreement ending military actions has been finalized, authorizing the removal of the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz ahead of a signing ceremony in Switzerland.

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that a deal with Iran terminating military operations on all fronts has been completed, and he authorized the immediate removal of the United States naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement was made via a social-media post in which Trump also invited commercial shipping to resume.

U.S. and Iranian officials are slated to meet for a signing ceremony on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland, according to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Sharif said the agreement includes ending military actions in Lebanon, though it remains unclear whether Israel has agreed to a similar cessation.

Sharif thanked Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar for their roles in the negotiations and noted that mediators will hold a series of pre-implementation meetings this week to prepare for technical talks and the official signing. Qatari mediators concluded intensive talks in Tehran and will hold further preparatory meetings in Doha.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed that the memorandum of understanding has been finalized and will be signed on Friday, adding that the full text will be released after the signing. He described the agreement as drafted amid continued distrust, emphasizing that it does not imply trust between the parties.
