Trump announces US-Iran agreement and end to naval blockade ahead of G7 summit

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States and Iran have reached a memorandum of understanding that will end the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian waters. In a post on his social-media platform, Trump said the deal includes Iran’s pledge not to obtain nuclear weapons and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Details of the agreement were not released, and Iranian officials have not confirmed the announcement.

Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that he intends to attend the signing ceremony, which Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said will be held on Friday in Geneva. Sharif thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their mediation efforts and noted that pre-implementation talks will begin this week.

Trump said the agreement will be signed electronically by him or the vice president and indicated that inspections and possible sanctions relief are part of the framework, though he declined to provide specifics. He also urged Israel not to conduct further strikes in Lebanon, calling a recent Israeli attack on Beirut “unnecessary” given the proximity of the deal.

U.S. officials, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, said the signing remains on schedule despite the Israeli strike. The administration expects the memorandum to trigger a 60-day period of technical negotiations before a final peace pact is concluded.

The announcement comes as Trump prepares to attend the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, and as oil markets remain volatile following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
