Trump says US-Iran peace deal slated for Sunday signing

Summary

President Donald Trump announced that a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran is expected to be signed on Sunday, while Iranian officials said the exact date remains uncertain.

President Donald Trump posted on his social-media platform that a deal to end hostilities between the United States and Iran is scheduled to be signed on Sunday and that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened to all traffic thereafter. He added that, once the agreement is in place, the United States would address Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei cautioned that the exact signing date is still to be confirmed, stating, "We will have to wait and see about the exact date of the signing of the memorandum of understanding, although it will not be tomorrow."

Pakistan, which has acted as a mediator, said the finalisation of the agreement is expected within 24 hours and that preparations are underway for an electronic signing. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote that the parties are "closer to a peace deal than ever before" and that technical talks are slated for the following week.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi previously indicated that the accord would also address the conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. U.S. officials confirmed that any economic benefits for Iran would be contingent on Tehran meeting its obligations under the deal.

The proposed agreement has been discussed for weeks, with earlier reports suggesting that Lebanon’s involvement remained uncertain.
