U.S. Men’s National Team Beats Paraguay 4-1 in World Cup Opener
The United States opened its 2026 World Cup campaign with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay at Sofi Stadium, highlighted by two goals from forward Folarin Balogun and an own-goal.
The United States men’s national team recorded a 4-1 win against Paraguay in its group-stage opener at Sofi Stadium on Friday. An early own-goal gave the hosts a 1-0 lead within seven minutes, and the scoreline was later extended by a brace from striker Folarin Balogen, who scored in the 31st minute and again before halftime. Christian Pulisic provided the assist for the second United States goal, while a deflected cut-back from Weston McKennie resulted in the own-goal.
Coach Lionel Pochettino, who took charge of the team in 2024, fielded a 3-2-5 formation that allowed fluid movement among midfielders and wingers. The United States maintained 65% possession and created multiple scoring opportunities, with contributions from Tyler Adams, Sergiño Dest, Malik Tillman and Antonee Robinson. Defender Chris Richards, returning from an ankle injury, started at centre-back alongside Tim Ream.
Paraguay, which had conceded few goals in CONMEBOL qualifying, struggled to contain the United States’ attacking play. The match marked Balogun’s World Cup debut and his first international goals for the United States.
The victory gives the United States three points and a positive start to the tournament, while Paraguay will look to recover in its next group match.
