Algal Bloom Persists in Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Amid Cleanup Efforts
Photos show the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool still covered in green algae despite cleanup measures, contradicting the president's recent statement that it looks beautiful.
New photographs taken by Reuters on Monday show the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool still heavily coated with green algae and surface scum, despite ongoing remediation work. A fence and signage indicate the area is closed to the public, with officials promising the pool will be ready for visitors by July 4.
President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform on Monday that the pool looks "beautiful" and encouraged supporters to visit, but the images do not support that claim. The algae bloom has been linked by UC Santa Cruz ecology professor Eric Palkovacs to recent renovations that included painting the pool a darker shade, which can increase water temperature and promote algal growth.
Cleanup efforts have involved adding hydrogen peroxide, vacuuming, and employing nanobubble ozone technology, yet the discoloration remains. The administration has also announced plans to repair damage to a waterproof matting system after July 4, describing the intended repairs as swift.
Authorities have reported several arrests and police reports related to alleged vandalism at the pool, though court records indicate only one individual has been charged. The discrepancy between official statements and the visible condition of the pool has drawn public attention as the holiday deadline approaches.
