Fire at Afipsky Oil Refinery in Russia Following Ukrainian Drone Strike

Summary

A fire broke out at the Afipsky refinery in Krasnodar Krai after Ukrainian drones were reported to have struck the site, prompting a state of emergency and causing injuries in nearby towns.

A fire erupted at the Afipsky Oil Refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai after the facility was reportedly hit by Ukrainian drones overnight on June 11. The refinery, which processes about 6.25 million tonnes of crude each year—roughly 2% of Russia's total refining capacity—was damaged by debris from intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the Krasnodar Krai Operational Headquarters. The agency said drone fragments fell in the Afipsky settlement, igniting a blaze that was extinguished around 7:30 a.m. local time.

Local residents posted videos showing explosions and air-defence activity, and officials confirmed that UAV wreckage also damaged an outbuilding, shattered windows and disrupted a gas pipeline in a nearby residential area. A state of emergency was declared in the village of Afipsky, Severskiy District.

The broader attack across Krasnodar Krai injured three people. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said drone debris struck an apartment building in the regional capital, Krasnodar, causing a fire that injured two people, while a third injury occurred in the Severskiy District where several homes were damaged.

The Afipsky refinery has been targeted in previous Ukrainian operations, including a drone strike in March 2024 and earlier incidents in January, September and November 2025. Ukrainian forces regularly conduct deep strikes on Russian military and industrial sites using domestically produced drones and missiles, as well as some foreign-supplied weapons.
