Ukrainian Drone Strikes Ignite Russian Refineries, Prompt Russian Retaliation Threat
Ukrainian forces launched a wave of drone attacks on Russian oil refineries near Moscow and in Krasnodar Krai, igniting fires and prompting emergency responses. The Kyiv Independent reported that a fire erupted at the Afipsky oil refinery after the drones struck the site, leading regional authorities to declare a state of emergency and record injuries in nearby towns. The Kyiv Post added that the same drone wave also damaged several bridges linking occupied Crimea to Russia, causing fuel shortages and extensive Russian air-defence activity. Newsweek said Ukrainian drones hit the Moscow Oil Refinery, igniting a blaze and causing Russian air defenses to intercept dozens of aircraft.
ABC News cited Moscow officials who said at least 60 Ukrainian drones were shot down in an overnight raid that damaged a refinery and forced flight restrictions at the city’s four international airports. The New York Times noted that the attacks injured at least 16 people and led to the temporary shutdown of those airports. NBC News reported that the Kapotnya oil refinery near Moscow was also struck, with city air defenses shooting down dozens of drones and briefly halting major airport operations. Yahoo reported that Russia vowed to carry out large-scale retaliatory strikes in response to the massive drone attack, which involved nearly 200 drones targeting Moscow and surrounding facilities.
