Police Arrest Man Over Attempted Murder Stabbing in Belfast

Summary

A man in his 30s, believed to be Somali, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a knife attack left a victim in his 40s seriously injured, police said.

Police in Northern Ireland arrested a suspect on suspicion of attempted murder following a knife attack in Belfast on Monday night. The individual, described as being in his 30s and thought to be of Somali origin, is alleged to have stabbed a man in his 40s, who remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said officers arrived at the scene within minutes and that investigators are still working to determine a motive. > "This brutal attack will have sent shock waves through the community, causing real concern. I want to reassure the local community that we are treating this attack with the utmost seriousness," he said.

Police urged the public not to share video footage of the incident, warning that doing so could cause further trauma to the victim's family and interfere with the investigation. The clip, which circulated widely on social media, showed a bystander confronting the attacker with a hurley, a wooden stick used in the sport of hurling.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as "sickening" and said he has "absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets." He added, > "My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, and I thank the first responders, including members of the public who intervened."
