JWST Finds Early Iron Enrichment in Ancient Galaxies

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope team reported early iron enrichment in seven-billion-year-old galaxies after analyzing NIRSpec spectra of eight distant objects, Sciencecast said. The galaxies, observed at redshifts between 7. 2 and 10. 6, correspond to a time when the universe was less than 500 million years old.

Spectral analysis revealed a variety of low-ionization absorption lines, allowing the researchers to derive abundance ratios for several elements. The measured iron-to-oxygen ratios were higher than expected for such early epochs, suggesting that Type Ia supernovae had already contributed to chemical enrichment. These findings provide new insight into the timeline of stellar evolution and metal production in the early universe.
