Renowned Australian melanoma researcher Richard Scolyer dies at 59

Summary

World-leading pathologist Richard Scolyer, noted for his melanoma research, died in Sydney at 59 after battling glioblastoma, and will receive a state funeral.

Australian pathologist Richard Scolyer, a leading authority on melanoma whose work helped improve diagnosis and treatment of the disease, died on June 7 in Sydney at the age of 59. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Scolyer will be honored with a state funeral.

Scolyer was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, glioblastoma, in 2023. He survived well beyond the typical median survival of about one year, undergoing experimental immunotherapy that he publicly documented through social media, televised interviews, and a 2024 autobiography titled "Brainstorm," co-written with journalist Garry Maddox.

"The cancer specialist who became his own subject, Professor Scolyer walked his uncertain path with courage, determination and grace and his legacy will always be with us," Albanese said after the announcement of Scolyer's death.
