U.S. Data Center Permits Project Massive Power Demand by 2025

A Business Insider analysis found that permits for new U. S. data centers could demand up to 359 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, raising concerns about grid strain, water use and local opposition. The study estimated that total electricity demand from facilities approved through 2025 could range from 224 to 359 terawatt-hours per year.

The highest consumption scenarios are linked to large hyperscale projects, notably Amazon’s planned facility in Mississippi, Microsoft’s data center in Wisconsin, and QTS’s site in Utah. Industry observers warned that such demand could strain regional power grids and increase water usage for cooling. Local officials and community groups have voiced opposition, citing potential impacts on reliability and environmental resources.
