Target recalls baby wipes over bacterial contamination risks
Target is recalling two varieties of baby wipes due to potential bacterial contamination that could lead to serious health risks, as reported by the FDA.
Target is recalling two types of its Up and Up brand baby wipes due to concerns about possible bacterial contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the notice, stating that the wipes may harbor bacteria that can cause serious and life-threatening infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as newborns and infants.
The affected products, which include the Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes, have been linked to consumer complaints regarding discoloration and adverse symptoms such as skin and eye irritation, as well as infections potentially related to their use. Testing identified the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli in samples of the wipes.
Health authorities emphasize that while healthy individuals might experience localized infections, newborns and immunocompromised individuals are at greater risk of developing severe conditions like sepsis or pneumonia.
The recall includes wipes with specific manufacturing and expiration dates, and consumers are advised to stop using the products and return them for a full refund. Target customers with inquiries can reach the store's Guest Relations.
