Russia executed a substantial missile and drone attack on Ukraine late Monday, impacting cities such as Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, resulting in a death toll of at least 11 and over 100 injuries. The assault, described as a "massive strike" by Russia's Defense Ministry, involved 73 missiles and 656 drones, with claims that a majority were neutralized by Ukrainian defenses.
Kyiv was targeted heavily, with a missile strike leading to the collapse of a 24-story apartment building, resulting in at least four deaths and 63 injuries, as reported by the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko. In Dnipro, at least seven people were killed, including a rescue worker, and 36 others were hurt. Pictures from the scene showed significant damage to residential structures and burned vehicles. Kharkiv also reported injuries, with at least 14 individuals affected.
Amid this escalation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for Europe to establish its own air defense systems and emphasized the need for U.S. Patriot missile systems to intercept further threats. He had cautioned residents just hours before the assault, reiterating the potential for a major Russian strike. Zelenskyy noted intelligence warnings were still in effect, indicating a serious threat from ongoing Russian missiles and drones. The conflict, now into its fourth year, continues to escalate with both sides targeting critical infrastructure.
