Intense Russian Strikes in Kyiv and Dnipro Claim Lives
Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and Dnipro resulted in at least 10 fatalities and numerous injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The assault comes after a prior warning from Russia about targeting decision-making centers in Ukraine.
Russia launched a significant wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine early Tuesday, resulting in at least 10 deaths and leaving at least 58 others injured in Kyiv alone, according to local authorities.
Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that four people were killed, including three children, as a nine-story apartment building partially collapsed in the Podilskyi district. In Dnipro, six individuals lost their lives and another 33 were injured in a separate attack. Ukraine's Air Force indicated that over 700 projectiles were involved, with 33 missiles successfully hitting targets.
Prior to the strikes, Russia had issued a warning on May 25, suggesting a focus on what it termed "decision-making centers" in Kyiv, and urging Western diplomats to exit the area. This followed a claim of a Ukrainian drone attack that allegedly killed 21 students in a Russian-controlled region.
Residents of Kyiv had been on high alert since the warning, with shelters filling to capacity as people sought refuge from the anticipated assaults. Many families resorted to sleeping in subway stations and parking lots due to persistent threats of attacks. On Tuesday morning, shortly after alarm systems activated, the strikes commenced, catching some individuals off guard.
As daylight broke, families began to emerge from shelters, facing the aftermath of the attacks, which intensified fears among the population amid an ongoing conflict that has seen regular bombardments across Ukraine.
