Ukraine Faces Large-Scale Aerial Assault from Russia, Causing Casualties and Damage

Russia launched a widespread aerial attack against Ukraine on June 2, causing significant casualties and damage in several cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro. Officials reported at least five fatalities and 27 injuries nationwide.

In Dnipro, regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed that multiple residential buildings were struck, resulting in five deaths and 16 injuries. Eyewitness accounts revealed images of partially collapsed structures. In Kyiv, the assault began around 1:30 a.m. local time, followed by further explosions and air raid alerts into the early morning hours. Local authorities reported power outages in several neighborhoods due to the onslaught.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated that the Podilskyi district suffered substantial damage, with incidents of missile debris leading to fires and the partial collapse of a nine-story building. Additional damage was reported at residential buildings in other districts, and there were multiple fires linked to the fallout from the attack.

Amid the strikes, Polish military forces reported activating their aircraft to bolster air protection. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously issued warnings regarding a potential mass attack, highlighting concerns over the country’s air defense capabilities amid escalated threats from Russia. He reiterated the need for vigilance among citizens and underscored that the intelligence assessments pointed towards a planned assault.

The recent attack aligns with Russia's pattern of intensified bombing campaigns, reflecting ongoing tensions and stalemates in the conflict. Previous large-scale strikes had already caused significant damage in Kyiv, targeting critical government and cultural sites. The current escalation appears to coincide with stalled military advancements for Russian forces.
