Israel Captures Beaufort Castle Amid Intensified Military Operations in Lebanon

Israeli forces have taken control of the Beaufort Castle, a medieval fortress dating back to the Crusader era, marking a significant shift in military engagement in southern Lebanon. The flag of Israel now flies over the site, which offers strategic views of the surrounding area, amidst an intensifying campaign against Hezbollah, the militant group Israel blames for attacks on its territory.

The capture reflects Israel's intention to establish a prolonged military presence, with Defense Minister Israel Katz stating, "Our brave soldiers have captured the Beaufort once again... and they will remain there as part of the security zone in Lebanon." This military maneuver comes during Israel's largest offensive in Lebanon in nearly three decades, with ground troops deploying and airstrikes escalating, despite a ceasefire officially brokered by the U.S.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Israeli operations, accusing the country of damaging relations and calling for immediate cessation of hostilities and Israeli withdrawal. He noted that the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 3,300 fatalities, with significant harm to civilians. Hezbollah has vowed not to disarm while Lebanon is under attack, complicating prospects for resolution.
