Rescue of Gold Miners in Laos Continues as Four More are Saved from Flooded Cave

Résumé

Four additional gold miners were rescued from a flooded cave in Laos after spending over a week trapped, following recent efforts to pump out water and make the conditions safe for their evacuation.

Rescue workers in Laos successfully extracted four more gold miners from a flooded cave where they had been trapped for more than ten days. The organization Rescue Volunteer for People announced that the water levels had decreased sufficiently to allow the miners to leave with the assistance of divers.

Efforts to pump water from the cave had been ongoing but faced challenges due to heavy flooding from monsoon rains. The rescuers had been providing food to the trapped miners when they discovered that conditions were finally safe for an evacuation. Images from the rescue show the miners wearing oxygen masks and wrapped in foil blankets, although details regarding their health status remain unclear.

The group initially comprised seven miners, with reports confirming that five were located earlier in the week. Rescue operations faced significant difficulties, as access to the cave had been nearly impossible due to its challenging terrain. The first miner was rescued in a hazardous operation on Friday, in which lead rescuer Mikko Paasi described guiding him through the treacherous waters, emphasizing the high level of trust required under such conditions. Pasai acknowledged the extreme difficulty of the dive, praising the strength of the rescued miner.

Rescue Volunteer for People confirmed ongoing efforts to locate two remaining miners, although previous statements noted that the search for them had been scaled back amid fears for their survival.
