Bus Driver Charged in Fatal Stafford Crash Was Facing Previous Speeding Trial
The driver involved in a deadly crash in Stafford County, Virginia, was scheduled for a trial over prior speeding charges at the time of the incident, which resulted in five fatalities.
The bus driver involved in a fatal crash in Stafford County, Virginia, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Jing Sheng Dong, 48, from Staten Island, New York, was due to stand trial in Maryland for a previous speeding charge when the incident occurred.
On June 2, Dong was scheduled for a trial related to being clocked driving 72 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone earlier this year. The crash on Interstate 95 southbound on Friday resulted in five deaths and numerous injuries when Dong's bus failed to slow down for a work zone. Preliminary findings from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicate speed played a significant role in the incident.
Dong's bus, operated by E&P Travel Inc., was transporting 34 passengers from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina. Four of the deceased, a family from Greenfield, Massachusetts, were inside an Acura struck by the bus. The fifth victim was identified as Priscilla R. Mafalda, who was traveling in a Chevrolet Suburban that was also impacted. Dong remains hospitalized and is being held without bond pending his first court appearance.
