UN Blacklist Expands to Include Israeli Forces Amid Global Sexual Violence Allegations
The United Nations has added Israeli security forces to its blacklist for sexual violence, along with other nations, as the international body highlights severe violations in conflict zones worldwide.
The United Nations has included Israeli security forces on its blacklist for perpetrators of sexual violence, alongside groups such as Hamas. This addition follows accusations of documented patterns of sexual violence against Palestinian detainees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In response, Israel's Foreign Ministry denounced the decision as a reflection of the UN's alleged bias against the country, stating, "the disgraceful decision to include Israeli entities is proof that the U.N. is a corrupt organization that systematically focuses on Israel as its primary mission."
Other entities listed include Russian forces accused of committing sexual violence in Ukraine, including rape and torture of detainees. The UN report details over 310 verified cases of conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine, emphasizing the severity of abuses by the Russian military and security forces.
In Yemen, the report highlights the strategic use of sexual violence by the Houthi regime, including torture and forced marriages carried out by their women's unit, the Al-Zainabiyat. Patterns of sexual violence were also reported in countries such as Yemen, Syria, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with significant numbers documented in conflict situations, often involving armed groups and government forces.
As the report outlines trends across various nations including Afghanistan, Libya, and Sudan, it underscores the systemic nature of these human rights violations, where sexual violence is used as a tool of war and oppression. The report calls attention to the alarming situation of women and girls in conflict zones, where sexual violence is frequently committed with impunity.
