Blue Origin's Rocket Explosion May Hinder Lunar Exploration Plans
The recent explosion of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket raises questions about the company's role in NASA's lunar exploration program, potentially leaving SpaceX as the primary contractor for upcoming missions.
A New Glenn rocket owned by Blue Origin exploded during an engine-firing test at Cape Canaveral ahead of a planned satellite launch. This incident severely jeopardizes Blue Origin's involvement in NASA's Artemis III mission, as the rocket was expected to deploy the Blue Moon lander to carry NASA payloads to the moon's surface.
With the explosion grounding the New Glenn, experts suggest that NASA's lunar exploration program may become reliant on SpaceX. Wendy Whitman Cobb, a professor at the U.S. Air Force School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, indicated that Blue Origin's delays would likely disqualify it from contributing to the Artemis III mission. She stated, "This setback means that Artemis III, and NASA’s entire lunar exploration program, is likely to be dependent on SpaceX for the time being."
SpaceX, while still working on its Starship lunar lander variant, remains in a favorable position amidst these developments. If SpaceX cannot prepare its Starship in time, there are concerns that the Artemis III orbital-docking test could be postponed until 2028, delaying subsequent missions.
In contrast, SpaceX has established a dominant foothold in the space launch industry, controlling over 80% of global rocket launches last year and significantly scaling its Starlink satellite business. The fallout from the New Glenn explosion not only hinders Blue Origin's plans but also sets back its efforts in the satellite sector, intensifying its competition with SpaceX.
