Investigations Intensify Around Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez Amid Multiple Legal Cases

Résumé

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez faces mounting legal challenges as authorities investigate various allegations involving his inner circle, including possible influence peddling and judicial obstruction.

Authorities conducted a 12-hour search at the national headquarters of the Socialist Party (PSOE) in Madrid as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged judicial obstruction related to the Leire Díez case. This operation, directed by National Court judge Santiago Pedraz, aims to investigate claims that the PSOE allocated 178,000 euros to a network intended to discredit judges handling cases involving Sánchez's associates.

Significantly, the case implicates former PSOE officials, including Santos Cerdán and Gaspar Zarrías, and has revealed prior allegations against Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, who recently resigned following his conviction for disclosing confidential information. He is now the first attorney general in Spain's history to face such charges.

Moreover, the former prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has been identified as a suspect in the Plus Ultra case related to influence peddling and money laundering connected to a public bailout of an airline. His financial accounts have been frozen pending further investigation.

Sánchez's family is also under scrutiny, with an indictment against his wife, Begoña Gómez, regarding influence peddling and misappropriation. As the legal turmoil escalates, Sánchez has requested to address Congress on the situation, as the opposition party, PP, considers a potential no-confidence motion.
