Chemical Tank Implosion at Washington Paper Mill Results in Fatalities and Injuries

Summary

A chemical tank implosion at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company in Longview, Washington, has resulted in one confirmed death and multiple injuries, with several individuals transported to local hospitals for treatment.

A chemical tank exploded at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company in Longview, Washington, early Tuesday morning, resulting in at least one fatality and numerous injuries. According to the Longview Fire Department, the 80,000-gallon chemical tank was approximately 60% full when it imploded, causing injuries ranging from chemical burns to inhalation problems.

Nine individuals were transported to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center, where six patients are reported to be in fair condition. The Legacy Oregon Burn Center is also treating some of the injured. Local officials, including Fire Chief Scott Goldstein, expressed the emotional impact of the incident on first responders, many of whom have personal connections to the mill workers.

The Washington Department of Ecology confirmed that Nippon Dynawave had no recent environmental penalties, although they reported a potential violation regarding a spill of white liquor into a nearby drainage ditch, attributed to the explosion. The department plans to assess the environmental impact of the leak. "They [Nippon] did what they needed to do by letting us know about it as soon as they could," said spokesperson Brittny Goodsell.

There are currently no threats to the surrounding community, as affirmed by Battalion Chief Mike Gorsuch. Emergency crews continue to work on the scene, which has been described as a "mass casualty scene," and further updates are expected later in the day.
