Newly Discovered Freshwater Reservoir Off East Coast Offers Long-term Water Supply Potential

Summary

A significant freshwater reservoir has been confirmed beneath the Atlantic seafloor, extending from New Jersey to Maine, with enough capacity to supply New York City for around 800 years. This finding follows nearly six decades of speculation based on earlier oil drilling reports.

A recent drilling expedition has confirmed the existence of a massive freshwater reservoir beneath the Atlantic seafloor, stretching approximately 600 kilometers from offshore New Jersey to Maine. Conducted between May and August 2025 and validated in early 2026, the expedition revealed that the reservoir could potentially supply a city the size of New York City with freshwater for about 800 years.

This discovery builds on historical records from the late 1960s and early 1970s, when oil companies, while searching for petroleum, unexpectedly reported freshwater findings. Although these reports were archived by the United States Geological Survey, the hydrological community long hypothesized the existence of a substantial freshwater reservoir beneath the northeastern U.S. The IODP³-NSF Expedition 501, led by geophysics professor Brandon Dugan and Rebecca Robinson from the International Ocean Discovery Program, involved drilling at three specific locations off Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, reaching depths of approximately 400 meters.

The expedition collected about 13,200 gallons of low-salinity water, with salinity levels varying based on proximity to the shore. Dugan noted that a geological seal composed of clay and silt maintains the separation of the freshwater from the saltwater above, a feature that has persisted for approximately 20,000 years since the last glacial period.

While the reservoir offers potential backup water supply amidst looming pressures on existing freshwater sources, tapping into this resource presents significant challenges. Water extraction would require substantial infrastructure development and could carry environmental risks that necessitate further study. Additionally, the reservoir's finite nature means it is not a permanent solution to water supply issues. As research continues, scientists will explore if similar reservoirs exist in other coastal regions around the world, potentially opening new avenues for freshwater supply.
