Discovery of Freshwater Reservoir Beneath Atlantic Seafloor
Researchers have identified a substantial freshwater reservoir located beneath the Atlantic Ocean, potentially capable of supplying New York City for up to 800 years.
Scientists have confirmed the existence of a significant freshwater reservoir lying beneath the Atlantic seafloor, stretching from offshore New Jersey to Maine. Preliminary estimates indicate that this reservoir may contain enough water to support a population comparable to that of New York City for approximately 800 years.
The discovery was made during Expedition 501, a three-month drilling mission conducted near Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in 2026. During this expedition, researchers extracted around 13,200 gallons of low-salinity water from depths of up to 1,300 feet below the seafloor. The freshwater samples were found to meet U.S. drinking water safety standards for salt content, with leading scientist Brandon Dugan noting the excitement surrounding the presence of freshened water in various sediment types.
This underground water likely originated from the last ice age, approximately 20,000 years ago, when melting ice sheets forced freshwater into underlying sediments. While this discovery raises hopes for addressing global water shortages, researchers caution that significant time and resources will be required to assess the reservoir's size, connectivity to land aquifers, and environmental impacts before any potential usage can be considered. As Dugan emphasized, the aim is to thoroughly understand the system to provide valuable information for future decisions regarding its use.
