US Conducts Airstrikes on Iranian Military Site Amid Fragile Ceasefire

Resumen

The US military has launched airstrikes on a military site in Bandar Abbas, Iran, amid ongoing negotiations to end a three-month conflict. This marks the second round of strikes within three days, raising concerns over the fragile ceasefire between the two nations.

The US military has targeted a military site in Bandar Abbas, Iran's strategic port city, continuing a pattern of military engagement in the region. US Central Command (Centcom) reported that the strikes were a defensive measure and that forces had also intercepted four Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz. The attack on Bandar Abbas occurred just before a fifth drone could be launched, with local media in Iran noting that explosions were heard.

These actions come during a delicate ceasefire agreement, which is currently under threat due to the renewed hostilities. This represents the second instance within three days that the US has conducted airstrikes in Iran, which Centcom described as necessary to protect its troops from Iranian threats. Earlier, the US targeted missile sites in southern Iran in similar self-defense measures.

Iran has condemned these strikes as a significant breach of the ceasefire, vowing a strong response to any hostilities. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed they had downed a US drone and engaged other US aircraft that entered Iranian airspace.

In a recent cabinet meeting, US President Donald Trump stated that while negotiations with Iran are ongoing, the US strategy will remain consistent regardless of upcoming elections. He acknowledged that Iran is eager for a deal but expressed dissatisfaction with the current progress. Trump indicated a readiness to resume larger-scale military operations if an agreement is not reached, following reports of a draft deal that included the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and withdrawal of US forces, which the White House dismissed as false. Both sides had hinted at progress towards a potential deal late last week, but Iran later noted that an agreement was not imminent.
