Federal Prosecutors Dismiss Charges Against 'Broadview Six' Amid Grand Jury Misconduct

摘要

Federal prosecutors have dropped all charges against the remaining members of the 'Broadview Six' following revelations of misconduct during grand jury proceedings.

Federal prosecutors have dismissed all charges against the remaining four members of the 'Broadview Six,' a group arrested during a protest outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview, Illinois, last fall. The decision follows a closed-door hearing that revealed significant errors in the grand jury process.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros announced the dismissal in court, citing improper handling of the grand jury proceedings by the lead prosecutor.

The defendants—former congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh, Oak Park Village Trustee Brian Straw, 45th Ward Democratic Committeeperson Michael Rabbitt, and Andre Martin—were initially indicted on felony conspiracy charges, which were later reduced to misdemeanor counts.

Defense attorneys argued that the grand jury process was tainted by prosecutorial misconduct, including ex parte communications and the exclusion of dissenting jurors.

Judge April Perry expressed shock over the redactions in the grand jury transcripts, stating she had never seen such prosecutorial behavior before a grand jury.

Following the dismissal, defense attorney Chris Parente criticized the Department of Justice's handling of the case, stating that the actions by federal prosecutors with the grand jury "should shame every American."

The case stemmed from a September 2025 protest where the defendants were accused of impeding federal agents outside the Broadview ICE facility.

With the charges dismissed, the scheduled trial has been canceled, and the defendants are no longer facing prosecution.
