Cornyn Concedes Trump Endorsement Unlikely in Texas Senate Runoff
Senator John Cornyn acknowledges that President Donald Trump is unlikely to endorse him in the upcoming Texas Senate runoff against Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has acknowledged that President Donald Trump is unlikely to endorse him in the upcoming Republican primary runoff for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas. Speaking at a rally on Monday, Cornyn stated, "I think that ship has finally sailed," referring to the prospect of securing Trump's endorsement.
Despite this, Cornyn expressed openness to a campaign visit from the president during the general election, should he win the May 26 runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Both candidates have actively sought Trump's support throughout the campaign. In early March, Trump indicated he would make an endorsement "soon," but has yet to do so.
The runoff follows a closely contested primary where Cornyn secured 42% of the vote to Paxton's 40.5%, necessitating a runoff as neither candidate achieved the required majority. The winner will face Democratic State Representative James Talarico in the general election.
