Trump Administration Establishes $1.8 Billion Fund to Compensate Alleged Victims of Government 'Weaponization'

Resumen

The Trump administration has created a $1.8 billion fund to compensate individuals who claim to have been unfairly targeted by government actions, as part of a settlement to drop a lawsuit against the IRS.

The Trump administration has announced the creation of a $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" aimed at compensating individuals who assert they were unjustly targeted by government actions. This initiative is part of a settlement agreement in which President Donald Trump agreed to drop a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over the unauthorized disclosure of his tax returns.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the fund is intended to provide a systematic process for victims of "weaponization and lawfare" to seek redress. The fund will be managed by a five-member commission appointed by the Attorney General, with one member selected in consultation with congressional leadership.

Critics have raised concerns about the fund's potential use. Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), have introduced legislation to block the fund, arguing it could serve as a "slush fund" for the president's allies. Additionally, two former law enforcement officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attack have filed a lawsuit seeking to dismantle the fund, describing it as a "corrupt sham" that could reward individuals involved in the Capitol riot.

The settlement also includes a clause permanently shielding President Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization from future federal tax-related examinations or prosecutions. This aspect of the agreement has further intensified the controversy surrounding the fund.
