Louisiana Senator Faces Trump-Endorsed Challenger in Republican Primary

Résumé

Senator Bill Cassidy confronts a primary challenge from Representative Julia Letlow, backed by former President Donald Trump, in Louisiana's Republican primary.

Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana is contending with a significant primary challenge from Representative Julia Letlow in the state's Republican primary. Letlow has secured the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, who has been critical of Cassidy following his vote to convict Trump during the 2021 impeachment trial.

Cassidy, 68, is among the few Republican senators who voted to convict Trump after the January 6 Capitol attack. Despite this, he has highlighted his collaborative efforts with the former president on various legislative initiatives. However, Trump's endorsement of Letlow has intensified the primary race.

Letlow, 45, entered the political arena after winning a special election for Louisiana's 5th Congressional District in 2021, following the death of her husband, who had been elected but passed away before taking office. She has criticized Cassidy for his impeachment vote, asserting that Louisiana deserves a senator whose positions are predictable under pressure.

The primary is scheduled for May 16, 2026. If no candidate secures a majority, a runoff will occur on June 27. This election marks a shift in Louisiana's electoral process, transitioning from an open primary system to closed party primaries, allowing only registered party members to vote in their respective primaries.

Cassidy has significantly outspent his opponents, allocating $9.6 million in campaign advertisements and benefiting from an additional $12.3 million from a supporting super PAC. He has attempted to portray Letlow as overly progressive due to her previous support for diversity and inclusion initiatives. Despite these efforts, recent polling indicates a competitive race, with Letlow gaining momentum.

The outcome of this primary is anticipated to reflect the ongoing influence of Trump's endorsements within the Republican Party and could signal the party's direction ahead of the 2026 general elections.
