Taiwan Reaffirms Sovereignty Following Trump's Independence Warning

Resumen

Taiwan's government reasserted its status as a sovereign nation after U.S. President Donald Trump cautioned against declaring formal independence from China.

Following U.S. President Donald Trump's recent caution to Taiwan against declaring formal independence from China, Taiwan's government has reaffirmed its status as a sovereign nation. During a state visit to Beijing, Trump stated that while U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged, he opposes the island's formal declaration of independence. In an interview with Fox News, Trump remarked, "I'm not looking to have somebody go independent and, you know, we're supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war. I'm not looking for that."

In response, Taiwan's Presidential Office Spokesperson Karen Kuo emphasized that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a "sovereign, independent democratic country; this is self-evident," and stated that Beijing's claims are "therefore without merit."

Chinese President Xi Jinping has identified Taiwan as the "most important issue in China-U.S. relations," warning that mishandling it could lead to conflict. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification.
