WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC since 1976. The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has resulted in over 390 suspected cases and at least 100 deaths in the DRC's Ituri province. Uganda has reported two confirmed cases, including one death, both linked to travel from the DRC. Neighboring countries Rwanda and South Sudan are on high alert. The Bundibugyo virus strain has no approved drugs or vaccines, and the WHO warns the outbreak could be larger than currently detected, with significant risk of regional spread.

In a separate development, the WHO is monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius. As of May 15, 2026, there are 10 confirmed global cases of hantavirus, a reduction from an earlier count after further testing. The ship, carrying approximately 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries, was quarantined following the outbreak. Three passengers—a Dutch couple and a German woman—died, with two confirmed to have had the virus. The remaining crew members have shown no symptoms.

Hantaviruses are typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents or their excreta. The WHO has stated that the risk of hantavirus spreading is low.

The WHO continues to coordinate international responses to both outbreaks, emphasizing the importance of surveillance, early detection, and public health measures to prevent further transmission.
