Americans in Congo Potentially Exposed to Ebola Amid Outbreak

Summary

Several Americans in the Democratic Republic of the Congo may have been exposed to Ebola during the recent outbreak, with efforts underway to ensure their safety.

Several Americans in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are believed to have been exposed to suspected Ebola cases during the country's latest outbreak, with some considered to have had high-risk exposures. At least one individual may have developed symptoms, though test results are pending. The U.S. government is reportedly coordinating efforts to transport these individuals out of the DRC for safe quarantine and care if necessary. Potential destinations include an American military base in Germany.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated it is "supporting interagency partners who are actively coordinating the safe withdrawal of a small number of Americans who are directly affected by this outbreak." The CDC is also assessing needs on the ground and working to deploy experts to assist with the response.

The current Ebola outbreak in the DRC's Ituri Province has resulted in 10 confirmed cases, 336 suspected cases, and 88 deaths, including at least four health workers. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The Bundibugyo strain of the virus has been identified as the cause, marking only the third detected outbreak of this strain. There is no licensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, and treatment consists of supportive care.

The outbreak's epicenter is in a region with ongoing conflict, complicating response efforts. The area borders Uganda, South Sudan, and Rwanda, raising concerns about potential cross-border transmission. Neighboring Uganda has reported an imported Ebola death traced to a Congolese patient infected with the Bundibugyo virus. The CDC has mobilized response activities and is monitoring the situation closely, noting that the risk to the American public remains low.
