Meta Announces 8,000 Job Cuts Amid AI Investment Shift

Résumé

Meta is laying off approximately 8,000 employees, about 10% of its workforce, to reallocate resources toward artificial intelligence initiatives.

Meta has initiated layoffs affecting approximately 8,000 employees, representing about 10% of its global workforce, as part of a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence (AI) development. The company is also canceling plans to fill 6,000 open positions.

In an internal memo, Chief People Officer Janelle Gale stated, "We're doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we're making."

The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring aimed at enhancing efficiency and focusing on AI initiatives. Meta has projected capital expenditures between $125 billion and $145 billion for 2026, primarily to support AI infrastructure and development.

Employees have expressed concerns about the impact of AI on job security. A technical writer shared on social media, "After nearly four years at Meta, I was one of the many, many people who were laid off today. Not just me, not just my team, but my whole entire 'function' was let go. Traded in for dollars to be spent on AI investment."

Meta has provided guidance on severance and visa support for affected employees, expressing gratitude for their contributions. The company has not announced plans for further company-wide layoffs this year.
