SpaceX's Starship V3 Completes Maiden Test Flight with Partial Success

Summary

SpaceX's Starship V3, the most powerful rocket to date, completed its first test flight, achieving key objectives despite some setbacks.

SpaceX's Starship V3, the tallest and most powerful rocket ever built, embarked on its inaugural test flight on May 22, 2026, from the company's Starbase facility in Texas. The 408-foot-tall rocket lifted off at 6:30 p.m. EDT, marking the 12th test flight in the Starship program and the first for the V3 iteration.

During the flight, the Super Heavy booster, equipped with 33 Raptor engines, failed to execute its boost-back burn and subsequently crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. This outcome was anticipated, as recovery was not planned for this test.

The Starship upper stage experienced the loss of one of its six Raptor engines during ascent but successfully deployed 20 mock Starlink satellites and two modified real ones designed to test Starlink V3 hardware and capture heat shield imagery. The mission concluded with the upper stage splashing down in the Indian Ocean, where it erupted in flames upon impact—an expected result for this test.

This test flight represents a significant milestone for SpaceX as it continues to develop Starship for future missions, including NASA's Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon by 2028.

The launch also comes at a pivotal time for SpaceX, as the company prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) expected to raise substantial capital for further development and expansion.
