SpaceX Reschedules Starship V3 Launch After Technical Delay
SpaceX postponed the inaugural launch of its Starship V3 rocket due to a hydraulic pin issue, with a new attempt scheduled for May 22.
SpaceX has rescheduled the first launch of its Starship Version 3 (V3) megarocket to May 22, following a last-minute technical issue that halted the initial attempt on May 21. The uncrewed test flight is set to lift off from the company's Starbase facility in South Texas during a 90-minute window opening at 6:30 p.m. EDT (2230 GMT).
The May 21 launch was aborted within 30 seconds of liftoff due to a malfunctioning hydraulic pin in the launch tower's arm. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk indicated that if the issue is resolved promptly, another launch attempt could occur as early as Friday.
This mission, designated Flight 12, marks the debut of the Starship V3, which features significant upgrades over its predecessors, including a redesigned fuel system, new Raptor engines, improved flight control features, and enhanced payload deployment mechanisms. The test flight aims to deploy 20 mock Starlink satellites and two modified real satellites to assess new Starlink V3 hardware and evaluate Starship's heat shield through imaging.
The success of this launch is critical for SpaceX's broader objectives, including supporting NASA's Artemis program, which plans to land astronauts on the Moon in 2028 using Starship as a key component. Additionally, the performance of Starship V3 is pivotal as SpaceX approaches a major initial public offering, targeting a valuation of $1.75 trillion.
The upcoming launch will be the twelfth test flight of Starship and the first from the newly constructed Pad 2 at Starbase. The mission is expected to last just over an hour, with the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage performing controlled splashdowns in the Gulf of Mexico and the Indian Ocean, respectively.
