GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen's CNBC Interview Raises Questions Amid eBay Acquisition Bid
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen's recent CNBC interview regarding the company's $56 billion bid for eBay has drawn attention due to his vague responses and the financial feasibility of the proposed acquisition.
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen's recent appearance on CNBC has drawn attention following the company's unsolicited $56 billion bid to acquire eBay. During the interview, Cohen faced questions regarding the financial feasibility of the proposed acquisition, given GameStop's market capitalization of approximately $12 billion compared to eBay's $48 billion.
When pressed on how GameStop plans to finance the deal, Cohen's responses were notably vague. He repeatedly referred to information available on the company's website and suggested that the acquisition would be funded through a combination of cash and stock. However, he did not provide specific details during the interview.
The interview also highlighted Cohen's vision for the combined entity, aiming to transform eBay into a larger business by leveraging GameStop's infrastructure and focusing on collectibles. He stated, "eBay has the second largest commerce franchise and there is a big opportunity to do something much larger and pull costs out of the system as well as accelerate revenue growth."
eBay has confirmed receipt of the unsolicited proposal and stated that its board, along with financial and legal advisors, will review the offer to determine the appropriate course of action.
Following the announcement, eBay's stock rose over 7% in premarket trading, while GameStop's shares declined nearly 3%.
