Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius Leads to Multiple Deaths and Global Repatriation Efforts

A hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three deaths and prompted international efforts to repatriate passengers and crew. The Dutch-flagged vessel departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, with 147 individuals on board. The first death occurred on April 11, with subsequent fatalities reported in the following weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified the virus as the Andes hantavirus, the only known hantavirus capable of human-to-human transmission, typically requiring close, prolonged contact. As of May 11, there have been seven confirmed cases and two probable cases associated with the outbreak.

In response, a global repatriation effort is underway. The ship arrived at the port of Granadilla, Tenerife, Canary Islands, on May 10, where disembarkation and repatriation flights commenced. Passengers and crew are being monitored and quarantined as necessary to prevent further spread of the virus.

Health authorities emphasize that the risk to the general public remains low. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified the outbreak as a level 3 emergency response, indicating a serious but contained situation.
