CDC Addresses Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius Cruise Ship

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is addressing a hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which has resulted in three deaths and several confirmed or suspected cases. The ship, carrying passengers from 23 countries, departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, and has since been linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus, known for its potential human-to-human transmission.
CDC Acting Director Jay Bhattacharya stated that the risk to the public is significantly lower than that posed by COVID-19. He emphasized that hantavirus is more deadly if contracted but noted that its epidemiological risk differs markedly from COVID-19. Bhattacharya explained that person-to-person transmission of hantavirus requires prolonged close contact, making widespread transmission less likely.
The CDC has been monitoring the situation for several weeks, collaborating with state and local health departments, the World Health Organization, and foreign governments. Eighteen American passengers from the MV Hondius have returned to the U.S. and are under observation at medical facilities in Nebraska and Georgia. Bhattacharya assured that the CDC aims to keep the public informed without causing unnecessary panic, focusing on clear communication about actual threats and appropriate responses.
In response to criticism regarding the CDC's handling of the outbreak, Bhattacharya defended the agency's actions, stating that there has been no gap in the team managing outbreaks. He also addressed concerns about potential disease outbreaks during the upcoming World Cup, expressing confidence in the U.S.'s preparedness and existing systems to manage such events effectively.
