Flight Attendant Hospitalized Amid Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to Cruise Ship

A KLM flight attendant has been hospitalized in Amsterdam following potential exposure to the hantavirus, linked to a recent outbreak on the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius. The flight attendant, who exhibited mild symptoms, is in isolation at Amsterdam UMC and is undergoing testing for the virus.

The exposure occurred on April 25, when a 69-year-old Dutch woman, a passenger from the MV Hondius, briefly boarded a KLM flight in Johannesburg. Due to her deteriorating health, she was asked to disembark before the flight departed. She passed away the following day in a Johannesburg hospital, with subsequent tests confirming hantavirus infection.

The MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026. The voyage has been marred by a hantavirus outbreak, resulting in three confirmed deaths and several other cases among passengers and crew. The ship is currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, with health authorities implementing strict isolation and hygiene protocols to prevent further transmission.

Hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodent excretions. However, the Andes strain, identified in this outbreak, is known for its rare human-to-human transmission via respiratory droplets. The World Health Organization has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but maintains that the current global public health risk remains low.

Dutch health authorities are conducting contact tracing for all passengers and crew who may have been exposed, including those on the KLM flight. Passengers are advised to monitor for symptoms and seek medical attention if necessary.
